Week commencing 25th January

As a parent myself of 3, 2 currently in school and the other working, I am very aware of the huge pressure parents are under with tackling the home learning schools are setting.

So this week is a bit different for you!

MONDAY

Communication and Language

Read some books with a grown up. Talk about what happens in the story.

Some key questions to ask:

  • who are the characters in the story?
  • where does the story happen? (setting)
  • what happens in the story? think about the beginning, middle and end
  • why do you like this story?
  • what is your favourite part of the story?

These are really good questions to ask about every story as it will get your child  to think carefully about what they have listened to.

If you don have many story books then looking on youtube for some children's stories is great too.

Maths

Make a set of number cards from 1 to 10.

Practice putting them in order and counting from 1 to 10. If they can do this, count backwards from 10 to 1.

Can your child recognise all the numbers to 10?

Shuffle the numbers up and point to them and ask your child to tell you what number it is. Or ask your child to point to a number that you tell them.

Can you child recognise their name?  Can they tell you what sound it starts with?

Practice writing their name - please only use a capital letter for the first letter in their name.

Go for a walk outside. Talk about what you can see around you.

Some key questions to ask:

  • what can you see?
  • what can you hear?
  • what can you feel/touch?
  • what can you smell?

This encourages the children to explore their environment using their senses. And its a great way to notice new things around you!

Maths

Shapes are all around us.

Go on a shape hunt around your house - can you find something that is all these shapes?

  • square
  • triangle
  • rectangle
  • circle
  • oval

  • diamond

Phonics

This is a great game to play and gets your child to think about the initial sounds of things.

Play the game 'eye spy'

Say "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with ..." and then choose a sound.

If your child finds this too hard try spying things that are green or a circle shape.

Understanding the World

Look at some family photos or photos from an event like a holiday or party.

Talk to your child about what was happening at that time, who was there and do they remember it.

The children love to see photos of themselves as babies. Talk about the changes that have happened to them and how much they have grown.

Positional language

Today I'd like you to use and understand positional language.

You will need a teddy to play this game.

Ask your child to put the teddy in different places. Use the following positional language:

  • under
  • on top
  • next to
  • behind
  • inside
  • in front of

Then its your turn to put the teddy somewhere and ask your child to describe where he is.

See if you child can find them in the text of the book, or any writing that you may have in your house.

Always a good idea to get your child to write their name every day too!

  • where does the story happen? (setting)
  • what happens in the story? think about the beginning, middle and end
  • why do you like this story?
  • what is your favourite part of the story?
